“"The power of prayer" in the words of Father Eustace

Through prayer we can speak with God, and He comes to meet us to hear our pleas. It is through prayer that we live a personal relationship as children of God. One of the texts written by the Dutch priest offers a beautiful reflection on prayer and its importance in the Christian life.

We must pray with perseverance and always keep our spirit of prayer to God burning brightly. Read the text written by Father Eustáquio in its entirety:

The Prayer

“I have encountered many things in my life, and you too, that we would like to see improved, but we cannot achieve it, despite our efforts and the work of others. These things remain as they are. Today's society is full of abuses and miseries, for whose solution many work. However, there is little improvement, and in certain cases, things worsen; there are things that accompany man immutably from the cradle to the grave, and with him he rises and lies down, and it is necessary to have patience, Christian patience.”.

However, there would be a solution for many things, including improving social issues, if mothers taught their children to join their little hands in prayer, and especially if men prayed more. Many things, however bad they might be, would change for the better. Oh, that all homes, in cities and in the countryside, would imitate the apostles, saying: “Lord, teach us to pray!” Oh, if we had a people who prayed, the social question would be solved quickly. We would no longer need so many fighters against evil, because all Catholics would be intimately united in prayer; our adversaries would not strive so hard to destroy us, because joined hands are more powerful than two-edged swords, than clenched fists of hatred.

Just as the Amalekites were driven out by the prayer of Moses, so too would our enemies be driven out if we wield spiritual weapons.

It is true that Our Lord said: “Without Me, you can do nothing.” Neither Catholic Action, nor Crusades, nor Marian devotion, are of any use if God does not help. And for Him to help, it is necessary to ask. “Ask and you shall receive.”.
In many Catholics, the spirit of prayer has weakened through contact with modern thought, which aims first and foremost at autonomy, the elevation of the human personality, and self-sufficiency. There is a desire to do everything by one's own strength, and the supernatural is pushed to a corner of the subconscious. You who are here, do not wish to participate in this changing spirit. You want prayer in everything and for everything, and then you ask me: How should we pray? You should pray with humility, like the publican in the Gospel: “Lord, have mercy on me, a poor sinner.”.

You must pray with perseverance like the blind man of Jericho. When they told him not to shout so loudly to Our Lord, he began to speak louder and more insistently. You must pray with confidence, like that woman in the Gospel, who was not Jewish and asked for the crumbs that fell from the table. You must pray with abandonment to God's will, which always aims for what is best for us.

When should you pray? Without interruption. In the morning, at night, before and after meals, before work, in times of danger and temptation.
