Last Saturday, May 20th, the Vatican recognized the heroic virtues of Guido Schäffer and, through a decree from the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, declared him venerable. This is another step in Guido's beatification process.
The doctor, seminarian, and surfer was synonymous with caring for others. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to his service as a doctor and his mission to evangelize the poor and marginalized in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
On social media dedicated to Guido, the Vatican's announcement was shared with joy.

A doctor, surfer, seminarian, and a son deeply devoted to God, Guido, as a physician, helped needy people assisted by the Missionary Sisters of Charity. And after reading the book "The Brother of Assisi," he felt in his heart that it was time to leave everything behind to follow his calling to the priesthood.
He founded several prayer groups and was a tireless preacher of the Word of God. He had the gift of inspiring people with his great love for Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and the Holy Church. He led young people to conversion through his life testimony and his pursuit of holiness.
Originally from Volta Redonda, Guido lived in Rio de Janeiro until 2009, when an accident at Recreio Beach killed him at the age of 34. He was surfing at his usual spot, but that day, a loose surfboard in the water struck the back of his neck, causing a contusion that made him faint and drown.
