The Congregation of the Sacred Hearts and Saint Benedict – by Fr. Bernard Couronne, SS.CC

Why Father Coudrin e Henriqueta Aymer, founders of an apostolic Congregation, chose the Rule of Saint Benedict For the first steps of your community?

The reason was not convenience, but a combination of historical circumstances. The founders did not begin with lengthy reflections or preparatory studies, but allowed themselves to be guided by events in which they discovered that the Lord “led them as if by the hand.”.

Is there not an affinity between the spirituality and wisdom of the Rule of St. Benedict and our SS.CC charism? The Benedictine current through which the founders "received" the Rule of St. Benedict is precisely a current strongly marked by devotion to the Sacred Heart since medieval times. However, regarding the place that the Rule of St. Benedict occupies in life today, can we think that it no longer offers any particular interest?

The Rule of Saint Benedict:
– It proposes an art of living the Gospel, a balance and unity of life both on a personal and community level. Our fragmented and scattered lives do not seem to stand out in this art.
– He insists on listening, which is fundamental both in prayer and in fraternal life and pastoral relationships.
– gives full place and depth to fatherhood in the person of the abbot: will we not have to rediscover the need for brothers and sisters who, in the community, are witnesses to the fatherhood of God?
– ultimately leads us to the Gospel, and above all to Christ.

Today may have surprised us by not finding answers to many questions. But it has the merit of having awakened them in us, setting us on the path both in our reflections and in our hearts, available, open to "Listening..." And as Saint Benedict writes: "and you will succeed!"“
