SAINT DAMIAN OF MOLOKAI – The saint who inspired Father Eustáquio is celebrated today.

From his childhood, Father Eustace was inspired by the stories and heroism of Saint Damien of Molokai, known for his love and care for people suffering from Hansen's disease (leprosy). This inspiration led him to follow in the Saint's footsteps, entering religious life and becoming a missionary.

Who was Saint Damien of Molokai?

Jozef de Veuster was born in Tremelo on January 3, 1840. Upon entering the novitiate of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, he adopted the name Damien. Influenced by his brother, who desired to become a missionary in distant lands, Damien also felt called to the mission. With the congregation's permission, he departed for the Hawaiian archipelago, arriving in the capital, Honolulu. There, he was ordained a priest and dedicated himself especially to the sick.

At that time, leprosy patients were sent to live in a colony on the island of Molokai. Realizing the need for spiritual assistance for these people, Damien volunteered for this mission. Over time, he transformed the island, building a church, a hospital, an infirmary, a school, and houses for the inhabitants.

In 1885, at the age of 49, Damien also contracted leprosy. Despite being offered treatment off the island, he refused, choosing to remain among the sick. Even in his suffering, he continued his work of love and faith. Before passing away, he witnessed the arrival of new missionaries and nuns, including Blessed Mother Marianna Cope, who succeeded him in caring for the sick. Damien died on April 15, 1889.

The Recognition of Holiness
