Paraguayan Brothers of the Sacred Hearts visit Father Eustáquio's room.

The Brothers of the Sacred Hearts from Paraguay visited Father Eustáquio's room at the Alberto Cavalcanti Hospital in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, this month. They were present at the Congregation's Assembly (held in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais) and took advantage of their stay to visit the place where the Blessed Father spent his last moments on earth.

In the photo, the first brother from left to right is Brother Carlos Aquino, known as Carlito; in the center is Fr. Máximo Peña, sscc, Regional Superior of Paraguay; and on the right, Fr. José Ramon Torre-Marin, Fr. Toto.

They visited the place and heard stories related to the devotees who seek refuge in the room for prayers and requests for graces, through the intercession of Father Eustáquio.

Room at Alberto Cavalcanti Hospital retains features from 1943.

The Alberto Cavalcanti Hospital, formerly the Minas Gerais Sanatorium, still maintains the room where Father Eustáquio died on August 30, 1943. Photos of the Blessed Father adorn the walls, along with photographs of devotees who leave their offerings of gratitude for graces received through his intercession.

It was in this room that Father Eustáquio spent his last days. The place retains many of the things he left behind: a small, somewhat rusty iron bed, a straw mattress, a picture of the Blessed One, and a prayer for the sick. Some antique porcelain and a wall-mounted sink, where, according to accounts, Father Eustáquio kept his holy water, also remain in the small room.

The place, which has become a point of devotion to the Dutch priest, especially for hospital staff, seeks to preserve the simplicity lived by Father Eustáquio. Traditionally, for years, doctors and nurses have stopped by the place for a prayer before starting their workday.
