The Church of Father Eustace and its dedication to the Sacred Hearts

Father Eustáquio arrived in Belo Horizonte in April 1942. A little over a year later, in May 1943, the Dutch priest presented the community with a model of the future Mother Church, now the Sanctuary of Health and Peace.

The construction of a new church was necessary due to the high demand for Father Eustáquio, which exceeded the capacity of the church where he served, the Cristo Rei Chapel, of the old parish of São Domingos.

For the construction of the new parish, land was donated by the then mayor of Belo Horizonte, Juscelino Kubitschek.

The cornerstone of the main church was laid by Father Eustáquio in May 1943. On that occasion, the Blessed Father gave a homily speaking about the choice of the Sacred Hearts to be the patron saints of the place:

“As titular patrons of the Church, we have chosen the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, so that we may better fulfill our vocation of spreading devotion to the Sacred Hearts and adoring and making reparation to the Divine Hidden Sacrament.”
