Religious life is marked by the profession of vows (initially temporary) of poverty, chastity, and obedience, made after a year of preparation called the novitiate. The novice professes these vows for three years.

Perpetual Profession represents a person's definitive adherence to a religious Order or Congregation, in this case, the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Although the first profession marks the religious person's life forever, the perpetual profession decisively renews their commitment and following of God and the Church.
