The word "Advent" comes from Latin and means arrival. And for us Christians, that is what the Advent season signifies: the arrival of Jesus Christ. This time encompasses the four weeks leading up to Christmas.
To relive the anticipation of Christmas, the church uses the Advent wreath, which represents for Catholics the first announcement of Jesus' arrival. At the Sanctuary of Health and Peace, the Church of Blessed Father Eustace, it already holds a prominent place next to the altar of the Word.
The Advent wreath
The Advent wreath is formed by a circle, usually made of green foliage. The round shape symbolizes eternity, and the color green symbolizes hope and life. Typically, this part of the wreath is finished with a red ribbon or bow, symbolizing God's love for us and our love for Him.
In the center of the circle are placed four candles that should be lit every Sunday. The light of these candles symbolizes our faith. The candles also symbolize the manifestations of Christ: the Incarnation, Jesus in the poor and needy, Jesus in the Sacraments, and the second coming of Jesus.
The Advent wreath can also be used at Christmas, when a fifth white candle is lit until the end of the Christmas season.
