One of the main symbols of the Christian Christmas, the Nativity scene, was first assembled by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1223. Saint Francis wanted to show the peasants of Creccio, a town near Rome, what the night of Jesus' birth had been like.
Using clay, the Saint assembled Mary, Joseph, the baby Jesus, shepherds and animals, the Three Wise Men, and the star. With the nativity scene assembled, he was able to convey the Christmas night to the peasants in a clearer way.
After that day, the tradition of the nativity scene spread throughout the world. In Brazil, the first nativity scene dates back to the 17th century, when the religious figure Gaspar de Santo Agostinho set up his version in Olinda, Pernambuco.
Nowadays, almost all Catholic families set up their nativity scene as Christmas approaches. There are many different models available today, and each home decorates the representation in its own way, passing down from generation to generation this symbolic act that marks our anticipation of the arrival of the Christ Child.
