A parish register from the Sacred Hearts Parish, dated from 1941 to 1959, provides details about Father Eustáquio's final moments on earth.
The document states that on August 22nd, Father Eustáquio delivered a sermon with a solemn blessing of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. According to the document, the following day, August 23rd, the Dutch priest felt very ill, suffering from a high fever. Despite his weakened state, he still celebrated Holy Mass as usual that day.
Next, the date August 25th appears, with Father Eustáquio being transferred to the Minas Gerais Sanatorium (now the Alberto Cavalcanti Hospital, in Belo Horizonte). What follows are the final days of the Blessed One. On August 28th he receives the last sacraments and, the following day, renews his religious vows. On August 30th, the book details the religious man's death.
Read below the account as it is written in the register book, dated August 30th:
“Father Eustáquio died at 10:45 in the morning with the words “Deo Gratias”. The body was transported to the temporary chapel and there began a procession of thousands and thousands of people. The people consecrated their saint. It was decided to hold the burial on August 31st. The archbishop called to say he insisted on performing the commendation. The rectory was invaded by people who wanted to take some 'relic' of Father Eustáquio.‘
