We are approaching Advent, a word that comes from Latin and means arrival. And that is what this time means for us Christians: the arrival of Jesus Christ.
Advent encompasses the four weeks before Christmas. To relive this time, an ancient custom is becoming increasingly common in Catholic homes: the use of the Advent wreath. It symbolizes the first announcement of Christmas.
The wreath is formed by a circle, usually of green foliage. The shape symbolizes eternity, and the color, hope and life. It can be finished with a red ribbon or bow, symbolizing God's love for us and our love for Him. In the center of the circle are four candles that will be lit each Sunday. The light of these candles symbolizes our faith. The candles also symbolize the manifestations of Christ: the Incarnation, Jesus in the poor and needy, Jesus in the Sacraments, and the second coming of Jesus.
The Advent wreath can also be used at Christmas, when a fifth white candle is lit until the end of the Christmas season.
