The memorial to the victims of the Vale tragedy in Brumadinho, set up by the team from the Sanctuary of Health and Peace, was erected in the courtyard of the SSCC Community Center.
Featuring photos of the 272 victims of the disaster and an altar marking the exact time of the dam's collapse, the space pays homage to those affected and, especially, to those who lost their lives on January 25th of last year.
On either side of the altar, panels bear the names of each "jewel" lost that day. "Jewel" is how the families of the Brumadinho victims refer to their relatives who died in the dam collapse. They adopted the term in response to the then-president of Vale, Fabio Schvartsman, who, in testimony before Congress, used the word to refer to the company's economic importance. “"It's a Brazilian gem that cannot be condemned because of an accident.", Schvartsman said at the time.
The space was open for visitation during the months of January and February at the Community Center, attached to... Sanctuary of Health and Peace, in Belo Horizonte.
