The priest, who had just left the city of Água Suja (present-day Romaria-MG), arrived to be the first parish priest of the Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes in Poá-SP, created on February 11, 1935. A written document exists that reflects his first impressions of the town of Poá:
‘'From the station, a narrow street leads out, full of anachronistic houses, old houses from bygone eras. And the village is summed up in this colorless street, devoid of any interest, dead, without any liveliness.' 'Ox carts pass slowly, transporting vegetables from the surrounding farms. And there, at the end of the alley, on a rise of land dominating the entire landscape cut by bluish hills, stands the temple of Poá: Our Lady of Lourdes.'.
At the time, Poá had 3,000 inhabitants, most of whom worked in the capital, while the rest were dedicated to agriculture.
