The Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (SS.CC.), the same religious family as Blessed Father Eustáquio, announced the new Provincial Superior of the Brazil-Paraguay Province: Father Edvaldo Carneiro, ss.cc., last Wednesday. On Thursday, the new Provincial Council was also announced, formed by Fathers Élcio Mota, Samuel Silvero, Francisco Gleison Oliveira, and Geraldo Abílio Ribeiro.

The election took place during the XIII Provincial Chapter of Brazil-Paraguay, at the SSCC Retreat House in Pindamonhangaba-SP. The new provincial and council will lead the Province for three years. The provincial may be re-elected once and the councilors up to two consecutive terms.

The new provincial

A native of Suzano (SP), Father Edvaldo Carneiro was born on September 15, 1987, son of Antônio Alves Carneiro (deceased) and Laura da Silva Carneiro. He grew up in Ferraz de Vasconcelos (SP) and joined the Congregation in 2013. In 2016 he completed his novitiate in Chaclacayo, Peru, professing his first religious vows on January 29, 2017, at the Santo Emídio Parish in Vila Prudente. He made his Perpetual Profession on January 17, 2021, definitively confirming his religious commitment to the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts.

His theological training began at the Catholic University of Chile and continued in Belo Horizonte, where he completed his juniorate and finished his theological studies at the Jesuit Faculty of Philosophy and Theology (FAJE) in 2020. After his Perpetual Profession at the Sanctuary of Health and Peace, he was appointed to the Santo Emídio Community, where he received diaconal ordination in September 2021.

Throughout his career, he held various positions within the Congregation, including parish vicar, member of the Provincial Council, formator of postulants, provincial secretary, and head of the Retreat House in Pindamonhangaba.
