HABEMUS PAPAM – Cardinal Prevost is elected and becomes Pope Leo XIV

Following the announcement of “Habemus Papam” by the protodeacon, Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, Pope Leo XIV was presented to the entire world from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica at 7:22 PM Rome time (2:22 PM Brasília time). From there, he addressed his first words – in Italian and Spanish – to the approximately 100,000 people present in St. Peter's Square and Via della Conciliazione, and to all those following him through the media. (review these moments, from the white smoke to the blessing). Finally, he granted a plenary indulgence.

“Peace be with you all!

Dearest brothers and sisters, this is the first greeting of the Risen Christ, the Good Shepherd who gave his life for God's flock. I also wish that this greeting of peace would enter your hearts, reach your families, all people wherever they may be, all nations, the whole earth. Peace be with you!

This is the peace of the Risen Christ, an unarmed and disarming peace, humble and persevering. It comes from God, God who loves us all unconditionally. We still hear in our ears that weak, yet always courageous voice of Pope Francis blessing Rome!

The Pope who blessed Rome bestowed his blessing upon the world, upon the whole world, on that Easter morning. Allow me to continue with that same blessing: God loves us, God loves you all, and evil will not prevail! We are all in God's hands. Therefore, without fear, united hand in hand with God and with one another, let us move forward. We are disciples of Christ. Christ precedes us. The world needs his light. Humanity needs him as a bridge to be reached by God and his love. Help us also, and then one another, to build bridges, through dialogue, through encounter, uniting us all to be one people, always in peace. Thank you, Pope Francis!

I also want to thank all my brother cardinals who chose me to be the Successor of Peter and to walk together with you, as a united Church, always seeking peace and justice, always striving to work as men and women faithful to Jesus Christ, without fear, to proclaim the Gospel, to be missionaries.

I am a son of Saint Augustine, an Augustinian, who said: "with you I am a Christian and for you a bishop." In this sense, we can all walk together towards that homeland which God has prepared for us.

A special greeting to the Church of Rome! [Applause] We must seek together how to be a missionary Church, a Church that builds bridges, engages in dialogue, always open to receive, like this square with open arms. To all, to all those who need our charity, our presence, our dialogue, and our love.

(in Spanish)
And if you also allow me, a word, a greeting to all those and in a particular way to my beloved diócesis of Chiclayo, in Peru, from where a faithful village has accompanied its obispo, has shared its faith and has given so much, so much to continue being the faithful Church of Jesus Christ.

[Translation: And if I may also, a word, a greeting to all those, and in particular to my beloved Diocese of Chiclayo, in Peru, where a faithful people accompanied their bishop, shared their faith and gave so much, so very much, to continue being a faithful Church of Jesus Christ.]

To all of you, brothers and sisters of Rome, of Italy, of the whole world, we want to be a synodal Church, a Church that journeys, a Church that always seeks peace, that always seeks charity, that always seeks to be close, especially to those who suffer.

Today is the day of supplication to Our Lady of Pompeii. Our Mother Mary always wants to walk with us, to be close to us, to help us with her intercession and her love.

Therefore, I would like to pray with you. Let us pray together for this new mission, for the whole Church, for peace in the world, and let us ask Mary, our Mother, for this special grace.”
