The Feast of Mercy
On the second Sunday of Easter, the Church celebrates the Feast of Divine Mercy. Saint John Paul II knew how to value the mystical experience of Saint Faustina Kowalska. Indeed, the Church always has the grace of counting on people who allow themselves to be captivated by the greatness of God's love, in order to proclaim it to others. It remains very valid to turn to mystics, whose perception of mysteries goes beyond the poor reasoning of humans.
Saint Faustina writes: “O my Jesus, you know that from my earliest years I desired to become a great saint, that is, I desired to love you with a love so great that no soul had ever loved you before” (Diary 1372). We know that the Lord chose her for a special mission. After passing through the “dark night” of physical, moral, and spiritual trials, beginning in February 1931 in Plock, the Lord Jesus Christ himself began to manifest himself to Sister Faustina in a particular way, revealing in an extraordinary manner the centrality of the mystery of divine mercy for the world and history, present in all divine action, particularly in the redeeming Cross of Christ, and new forms of worship and apostolate in favor of this divine mercy. She describes this first vision: “From the tunic, slightly open over her chest, came two large rays, one red and the other pale. Soon after, Jesus said to me: Paint an image according to the model you are seeing, with the inscription: Jesus, I trust in you” (Diary 47). Throughout the Diary we discover that Jesus chooses her as secretary, apostle, witness, and dispenser of divine mercy.
